Abstract

Self-development has become an important issue among people in their 20s, as they are in the phase of emerging adulthood, characterized by identity exploration, uncertainty about the future, and various academic and career demands. One of the media platforms that discusses this issue is the YouTube podcast @SuaraBerkelas Episode 76, titled “Fakta Pahit yang Harus Kamu Telan Kalau Mau Berkembang di 20-an” featuring Jerome Polin. This study aims to examine how students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Class of 2022 interpret the messages of self-development conveyed in the podcast. This research employed a qualitative approach using Stuart Hall’s reception theory. The research subjects consisted of ten UMM students from the 2022 cohort selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate that self-development messages in the podcast were interpreted in various ways through the themes of self-awareness, self-regulation, growth mindset, and relevance. Most participants occupied the dominant-hegemonic position, while others were in the negotiated and oppositional positions, influenced by their personal experiences and social contexts. The study concludes that self-development is interpreted as a process of understanding oneself, managing challenges, embracing failure, and adapting to uncertainty during one’s twenties.
