Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement of students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) through the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at SMA Negeri 1 Kopang. This study employed a qualitative approach using Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages conducted in three cycles. The subjects of this study were 35 students of class XI F6. Data collection techniques included observation, HOTS tests, interviews, reflections, and documentation. The HOTS aspects examined in this study focused on analysis (C4), evaluation (C5), and creation (C6). The results showed that the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) improved students’ HOTS in Islamic Religious Education learning. The improvement was reflected in students’ active participation in discussions, their ability to construct logical arguments, analyze problems based on Islamic values, and formulate creative solutions through project activities. The percentage of students’ learning mastery increased in every cycle, namely 57% in cycle I, 80% in cycle II, and 91% in cycle III. Therefore, the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model proved to be effective in improving students’ higher order thinking skills in Islamic Religious Education learning.
