Abstract

Background: Sleep quality is an important aspect of maintaining health, especially in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Poor sleep quality can worsen glycemic control and increase the risk of complications. Smartphone use before bedtime is considered one of the behavioral factors that may affect sleep quality due to exposure to blue light that inhibits melatonin production. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between smartphone use before bedtime and sleep quality in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: This study used a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 96 respondents selected using simple random sampling. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while smartphone use was assessed using a questionnaire. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank test. Results: The results showed that most respondents had poor sleep quality (83.3%). The majority of respondents used smartphones before bedtime for ≤30 minutes, totaling 49 respondents (51%). The Spearman Rank test showed a significant relationship between smartphone use before bedtime and sleep quality (p = 0.008) with a correlation coefficient of -0.270, indicating a weak negative correlation. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between smartphone use before bedtime and sleep quality in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Longer duration of smartphone use before bedtime is associated with poorer sleep quality.
