Abstract
The 2024 National Survey on Women's Life Experiences (SPHPN) shows that 1 in 4 women aged 15–64 in Indonesia has experienced physical and/or sexual violence from a partner and/or non-partner during their lifetime. Misogyny is a form of discrimination directed at women, driven by hatred. Acts of misogyny are not only found in everyday aspects of life but also permeate various domains, one of which is mass media, namely film. The film Sehidup Semati by Upi Avianto serves as a concrete example of how forms of misogynistic behavior, particularly between husband and wife in domestic life are represented across various scenes within it. This study aims to analyze how signs of misogynistic behavior are constructed in the film Sehidup Semati.
This study employs the semiotic analysis method of Charles Sanders Peirce, which identifies three elements of the sign: the representamen, the object, and the interpretant, along with the trichotomy of icon, index, and symbol. It adopts a qualitative approach with an interpretive research type. The object of this study encompasses 9 scenes in the film that contain signs of misogynistic behavior. The findings of this study reveal that Sehidup Semati constructs misogynistic behavior as a phenomenon born from a complex and layered system. Misogyny in this film does not appear as individual behavior; rather, it is built as a gender-based power relation system that operates within domestic, social, and religious spheres. This construction of meaning is realized through a series of visual, verbal, and symbolic signs that position women in a subordinate role and present male dominance as something considered natural, legitimate, and difficult to question.
