Abstract
Generation Z faces a shift in values regarding the institution of marriage due to social media exposure, which often triggers skepticism toward long-term commitment. As a solution to safeguard themselves in accordance with Islamic Sharia, some members of Generation Z choose the path of taaruf (Islamic matchmaking). However, the brief process and limitations on direct interaction in taaruf give rise to communication challenges and high levels of uncertainty for couples. This study aims to understand the interpersonal communication dynamics that occur during the taaruf process in Generation Z marriages. This study utilizes two primary theoretical frameworks: Berger and Calabrese’s Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT) to explain individual strategies for reducing ambiguity, and Aubrey Fisher’s Interpersonal Communication Dynamics Theory. Fisher’s theory is employed to dissect interactions through four communication phases: orientation, conflict, emergence, and reinforcement. The methodology of this research is qualitative, using a constructivism paradigm. The research design is exploratory based on a case study approach. Research subjects were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of five Generation Z couples in Sumenep Regency who married through the taaruf process. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted interactively (data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing) with validity testing through triangulation. The results indicate that the interpersonal communication dynamics of Generation Z in taaruf proceed in a structured manner following Fisher’s phases and URT strategies. In the orientation phase, couples utilize passive, active, and interactive strategies through CVs to reduce uncertainty. The conflict phase is characterized by the negotiation of core principles and the role of a mediator as an emotional filter to maintain adab (Islamic etiquette). In the khitbah (emergence) phase, clarity of intent is validated through concrete actions and extended family blessings as social legitimacy. Finally, in the marriage decision (reinforcement) stage, communication becomes more managerial and functional for the preparation of the akad (marriage solemnization) while strictly adhering to Sharia boundaries. Overall, Generation Z integrates digital literacy and traditional values to create rational and adaptive premarital communication patterns.
