Abstract
This study aims to describe the process of social interaction in instilling Islamic character at the “Sang Surya II” Student Dormitory of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. The background of this research arises from the phenomenon of dormitory life, which not only serves as a residence but also as a space for interaction that shapes students’ attitudes, behaviors, and Islamic values in their daily lives. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The subjects are residents of “Sang Surya II” Dormitory, who are mostly university students. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The findings reveal that the process of social interaction in instilling Islamic character takes place through both formal and non-formal activities in the dormitory, such as religious studies, congregational prayers, community service, casual discussions, and daily shared activities. These interactions not only facilitate the exchange of symbols, language, and meanings, but also encourage students to practice role-taking and understand the generalized other, as explained in George Herbert Mead’s symbolic interactionism theory. Through this process, Islamic values such as discipline, Islamic brotherhood (ukhuwah Islamiyah), social concern, and responsibility are fostered and internalized among the residents. In conclusion, the process of social interaction serves as an essential mechanism in instilling Islamic character at the “Sang Surya II” Dormitory, as it occurs naturally, continuously, and involves shared experiences in students’ everyday life.
