Abstract
This study, entitled “Deconstruction of Traditional Women's Roles in Film: A Discourse Analysis of Little Women (2019)”, is motivated by the patriarchal social construction that has historically confined women to traditional roles centered on the domestic sphere while positioning men as dominant subjects in the public sphere. Such constructions are not only formed through social institutions such as family, education, and culture but are also continuously reproduced through popular media, including film. One film that portrays these dynamics is Little Women (2019), which presents the complexity of women's experiences through its female characters. This study aims to examine how resistance to traditional gender roles is represented in the film through the deconstructive approach proposed by Jacques Derrida. This research employs a qualitative method with a discourse analysis approach, focusing on dialogues, characterizations, and the narrative structure of the film as the object of study. Data were collected through in-depth observation of relevant scenes and by analyzing the meanings embedded in both visual and verbal elements. The findings reveal that the female characters in the film demonstrate different forms of resistance to traditional roles. Jo March rejects domestic norms and the notion of marriage as the sole purpose of a woman's life. Meg March represents a negotiation between personal desires and traditional values, while Amy March reflects a pragmatic awareness of the socio-economic realities that influence women's choices. Through the lens of deconstruction, this study finds that binary oppositions surrounding women's roles are neither fixed nor absolute; rather, they are fluid, negotiable, and open to the emergence of more complex meanings. The study concludes that women's roles in the film cannot be understood as singular and static but rather as dynamic social constructions that can be deconstructed to reveal tensions, contradictions, and alternative interpretations of women's positions in society.
