Abstract
This study was conducted to understand how PERSIS Bangil Islamic Boarding School teachers interpret and respond to Kamar JERI's YouTube content "Pesantren Collapses, Dozens of Students Die While Prostrating! Due to Careless Building" which discusses a tragedy that killed many victims. This study used a qualitative descriptive method based on field research (November 2025) with seven teachers as subjects selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation, then analyzed using Stuart Hall's reception approach (ecoding/decoding) to map the subject's meaning into dominant hegemonic reading, negotiated reading, and oppositional reading. The results showed that dominant reading emerged most frequently, especially related to discussions regarding the professionalism of victim handling and the safety of students and the negligence that occurred where the subjects accepted the content message according to the creator's intent. Meanwhile, negotiated reading emerged in discussions related to religious aspects and worship practices where the subjects stated that the interpretation of disasters as God's destiny must still be accompanied by ikhtiar (prevention). Oppositional reading, however, was relatively limited, particularly in reinforcing the assertion that the building structure was unfit for use. This finding confirms that Islamic boarding school teachers, as active audiences, interpret media content based on Islamic values, their experiences at the boarding school, and their moral responsibilities as educators and parents of students.
