Abstract
Background: The increasing elderly population is accompanied by an increase in the incidence of degenerative diseases, one of which is hypertension, which is a major health problem in this age group. In Indonesia, elderly refers to individuals aged 60 years and above (Kemenkes, 2022). The high prevalence of hypertension in the elderly requires an evaluation of the quality of drug prescriptions, considering that physiological changes and the complexity of clinical conditions can increase the risk of irrational therapy.
Research Objective: To determine the quality of drug prescribing in elderly patients with hypertension undergoing outpatient care at UMM Hospital, Malang based on WHO prescribing indicators.
Research Methods: This study was an observational study with a retrospective design and a quantitative descriptive approach. Data were obtained retrospectively from all medical records of elderly patients with hypertension during the period July-Desember 2024 using a time limit sampling technique.
Results: The results showed that all WHO prescribing indicator parameters still deviated from the standard, namely the average number of drug items per prescription sheet was 5.56 items, the percentage of generic drug prescriptions was 80.52%, antibiotics 3.79%, injectable preparations 4.29%, and compliance with the
National Formulary 96.07%.
