Abstract

Background: Excessive weight gain is a contributing factor to cardiovascular disorders. One indicator that can be used to assess cardiovascular health is resting heart rate. This indicator can be useful for assessing cardiovascular function and autonomic nervous system activity. Excessive body weight is suspected to influence resting heart rate values; therefore, it is important to understand the relationship between the two across various age groups.
Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between excessive body weight and resting heart rate based on age groups (adolescents, adults, and the elderly).
Methods: This study employed a quantitative, observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach involving 100 participants across the age groups. Measurements included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, upper arm circumference, and skinfold thickness. Resting heart rate was measured using a pulse oximeter. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation test
Results: In the adolescent group, no significant association was found between overweight and resting heart rate (r = 0.124; P = 0.457). In the adult group, no significant relationship was found between the two variables (r = 0.016; p = 0.929). In the elderly group, a negative correlation was found between the two variables (r = - 0.085; p = 0.532).
Conclusion: In this study, no significant relationship was found between excess body weight and resting heart rate based on age group. These results suggest that other factors may play a greater role in influencing resting heart rate
