Abstract
This study aims to determine how self-disclosure improves the quality of romantic relationships, particularly among Communication Science students from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Class of 2022. The researchers employed a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, employing constructivism as the paradigm. Data were obtained from observations and in-depth interviews with six subjects. The theory used in this study is the Social Penetration Theory proposed by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor. This theory explains the development of interpersonal communication through closeness, from superficial interactions to intimate and in-depth interactions through gradual self-disclosure.
The research findings indicate that self-disclosure plays a significant role in romantic relationships among university students. Several challenges affect the quality of romantic relationships, such as differences of opinion, lack of self-knowledge, and difficulty managing time. However, these challenges can be overcome through open, empathetic, and assertive interpersonal communication. Self-disclosure in each individual can be influenced by several factors, such as relationship duration, level of trust, emotional maturity, and balance between both parties. Communication skills and self-disclosure play a crucial role in building trust and resolving conflict in romantic relationships.
