Abstract

This study aims to examine the dialectics of poverty and access to education in the novel Dompet Ayah Sepatu Ibu by J.S. Khairen through a sociological approach to literature and Lucien Goldman's Genetic Structuralism theory. The research problems consist of (1) the elements that construct the novel that represent poverty and education; (2) the facts of humanity and the collective subject in the novel Dompet Ayah Sepatu Ibu; and (3) the author's worldview in voicing collective awareness of structural inequality. The method used is descriptive qualitative research with a sociological approach to literature. The data consists of excerpts from the novel's text, analyzed using data analysis techniques through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.
The results of the study indicate that the novel's intrinsic structure coherently represents the reality of structural poverty through characters, plot, and setting, depicting limited access to education. These human facts demonstrate a dialectical relationship between individuals and social structures, where characters experience economic pressures that impact limited social mobility. The collective subject represented is a poor community group experiencing systemic marginalization. Meanwhile, the author's worldview leads to a critique of structural injustice while offering optimism that education can be a means of social transformation, although not entirely free from systemic barriers.
Thus, this study confirms that literary works function not only as representations of social reality but also as material for reflection and critique of societal structures. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of studies in the sociology of literature, particularly in understanding the relationship between literature, structural poverty, and access to education.
