Abstract

The increasing role of Indonesian as an international language through the Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program demands innovative learning media that meet the needs of beginner learners. At the A1 level, BIPA learners often experience difficulties in vocabulary mastery and constructing simple sentence structures due to limited vocabulary and low engagement in conventional learning. This study aims to test the effectiveness of the Charades application as a digital game-based learning medium in improving vocabulary mastery and simple sentence structure skills for A1-level BIPA students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, while also identifying supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation.
This study used a mixed-methods approach with a parallel convergent design. Quantitative data were obtained through pre- and post-tests on nine A1-level BIPA students selected using purposive sampling, while qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews. Quantitative analysis was conducted using paired-sample t-tests to determine differences in learning outcomes before and after using the Charades app.
The results showed a significant improvement in learning outcomes after implementing the Charades app, as evidenced by an increase in mean scores and a more even distribution of learning outcomes. Qualitative findings indicated that students responded positively to the app because it helped them understand vocabulary contextually, facilitated the construction of simple sentences, and increased motivation, confidence, and engagement in learning. Challenges that emerged were primarily related to limited starting vocabulary, rather than the effectiveness of the tool. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Charades app is an effective learning tool for vocabulary and simple sentence structure for A1-level BIPA students, while providing an interactive, enjoyable, and communicative learning experience.
