Abstract
Background: Inpatients represent the most vulnerable population during a hospital disaster due to physical limitations and disorientation within the complex environment. Conventional evacuation standards often only place maps in public corridors, failing to provide relevant guidance for patients inside treatment rooms. This study aims to explore patient and family perceptions regarding the effectiveness of evacuation maps placed in treatment rooms as cognitive aids to enhance preparedness and a sense of safety.
Methods: This study employed a qualitative design with a descriptive approach. Data collection was conducted at the Jimbaran Inpatient Ward, Dr. Saiful Anwar Regional General Hospital, Malang, in July 2025. There were two participants selected using a purposive sampling technique with varying levels of dependency (total care and minimal care). Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis.
Results: Data analysis produced four main themes: (1) Lack of understanding regarding evacuation procedures, (2) Visual effectiveness of maps as orientation and educational media, (3) Psychological changes in inpatients, and (4) Patient aspirations for evacuation map optimization. The researcher found that the presence of maps in patient rooms can bridge information gaps, transforming patient ignorance into recognition of their surrounding environment, and rapidly increasing situational awareness of the complex hospital environment.
Conclusion: Room-based evacuation maps are proven effective not merely as directional signs, but as psychological interventions that enhance patient sense of safety. It is recommended that hospital management standardize the installation of evacuation maps in every patient treatment room using glow-in-the-dark materials and integrate them into the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for new patient orientation.
