Abstract
This study aims to describe the forms and types of morphological errors in Indonesian writing produced by BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) students at the B1 level at Open University Ho Chi Minh Vietnam. This research is motivated by the presence of various errors in the use of Indonesian morphology by foreign learners,
particularly in word formation processes such as affixation, reduplication, and derivation. These errors not only indicate inaccuracies in language use but also reflect the ongoing process of second language acquisition experienced by learners. Therefore, the analysis of
morphological errors is essential to understand the difficulties faced by students in mastering the morphological system of the Indonesian language.
This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The data consist of written texts produced by BIPA B1 students, which were collected through
documentation techniques from writing assignments during the learning process. The collected data were analyzed through several stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. In the analysis process, the researcher identified and
classified morphological errors into specific categories, including errors in the use of prefixes, suffixes, confixes, and word formation.
The results of the study indicate that the most dominant morphological errors made by BIPA B1 students occur in affixation, particularly in the use of prefixes such as me-,
ber-, and di-, as well as suffixes such as -kan and -i. In addition, errors were also found in
the use of confixes such as ke-an and pe-an, as well as in the selection of root words and
derived word formation. These errors are generally caused by a lack of understanding of
Indonesian morphological rules, interference from the first language, and limited vocabulary mastery. These findings demonstrate that morphology remains a major challenge for learners of Indonesian as a foreign language.
In conclusion, this study provides a factual description of the patterns of morphological errors made by BIPA B1 students. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for developing teaching strategies, designing instructional materials, and improving the quality of Indonesian language instruction for foreign learners, particularly in the morphological aspect. Furthermore, this study contributes to the development of
applied linguistics, especially in the fields of error analysis and second language learning.
