Abstract

Students’ ability in solving multiplication word problems is still relatively low. This is indicated by the results of the preliminary test, which showed that 75% of students had not achieved the minimum mastery criteria (KKM). Students still experience difficulties in translating word problems into mathematical expressions, identifying known and asked information, and performing multiplication calculations. Therefore, the researcher used Math in a Cup media in the form of concrete objects that can be moved or counted to help students understand and solve multiplication word problems.
This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles, namely Cycle 1 and Cycle 2. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects of this research were fourth-grade students of SDN 2 Landungsari. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation.
The results of this study showed that the use of Math in a Cup media could improve students’ ability in solving multiplication word problems. This was indicated by the increase in students’ learning mastery percentage from 21.4% in Cycle 1 to 80% in Cycle 2. The average score also increased from 59.8 in Cycle 1 to 78.7 in Cycle 2. In addition, students became more active during the learning process. Therefore, Math in a Cup media can be used as an alternative learning media to improve students’ ability in solving multiplication word problems in elementary school.
