Abstract
Learning media play a crucial role in the teaching process due to their significant benefits for learning activities. The purpose of this study was to develop comic-based learning media featuring folk tales to improve reading skills among fifth-grade elementary school students. Based on the results of observations and interviews with the fifth-grade teacher at SDN Tlekung 02 Batu, students still experience difficulties in deeply understanding the content of stories or reading materials during lessons. This situation indicates the need to implement a learning medium that functions as a tool to assist in the process of developing reading skills.
This study employs the Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model, which includes the Define stage—identifying needs and collecting data; the Design stage—involving the development of a conceptual framework and instructional materials; the Develop stage—covering development through validation testing and media feasibility assessment; and dissemination (Disseminate), which focuses on implementation for the primary target audience. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, questionnaires, reading skill tests, and documentation.
The development of this folklore-based comic learning medium achieved a validation rate of 81.2% from subject matter experts and 91.67% from media experts. Student responses to the medium reached 92%, with the category of “very interesting.” Improvements in reading skills were observed in the areas of pronunciation (83.33%), fluency (83.33%), intonation and expression (80%), punctuation accuracy (83.34%), and comprehension of the text (86.67%), with an overall average of 83% in the “very good” category. Thus, folklore-based comic media are deemed suitable and effective as an alternative Indonesian language learning medium to improve the reading skills of fifth-grade students.
