Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of social adaptation among college students from broken families as they complete their studies. This phenomenon is related to family conditions that are not functioning optimally, which can affect students’ emotional well- being, social interactions, and the continuity of their academic progress in higher education. This study employs a qualitative method using a case study approach. Research subjects were selected through purposive sampling, specifically students at Muhammadiyah University of Malang from broken families. Data collection techniques included interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that the social adaptation process occurs gradually, beginning with initial emotional reactions, disruptions in academic functioning and social interactions, and culminating in the development of various adaptation strategies. Students develop strategies such as seeking social support, engaging in activities to keep themselves occupied, and building independence. However, maladaptive forms of adaptation were also identified as responses to the emotional pressures experienced. This study highlights the importance of social support and emotional regulation skills in helping students from broken families to successfully complete their studies.
