Abstract

**ABSTRACT**

The development of digital media has transformed the way people access, understand, and interpret information, including sensitive and controversial historical issues. YouTube no longer functions solely as an entertainment platform, but also as a public discourse space where meaning exchange and negotiation of historical understanding occur. Through the comment section feature, netizens act as active subjects who interpret, accept, negotiate, or reject the narratives presented by content creators. This study aims to describe and understand netizens’ interpretations of conspiracy theory content related to the G30S/PKI event, as presented in the video “G30S/PKI & Teori Konspirasi-nya! | #HistorytellingJASMERAH” on Nessie Judge’s YouTube channel.

The analysis was conducted by mapping categories of interpretation toward actors and events, as well as identifying sentiment tendencies toward the alternative narratives presented. The theoretical framework used is Jürgen Habermas’ Public Sphere Theory, which views the comment section as an arena for public opinion formation in the digital space. Data were collected and analyzed through scraping techniques and digital observation.

The results show that netizens actively construct interpretations of the G30S/PKI event by assigning labels, positions, and interpretations to actors such as Soekarno, Soeharto, the military, the CIA, and the PKI. The majority of netizens tend to accept and interpret alternative narratives as plausible and relevant, reflecting a distrust toward official historical narratives. Meanwhile, some netizens demonstrate a negotiating or critical stance by referring to academic sources or different historical perspectives. In this context, the comment section functions as a digital public sphere where meaning-making and public opinion formation regarding the history of G30S/PKI take place.
