Young marriage is a social phenomenon that is still prevalent in society,
including in Ngajum District, Malang Regency. Young couples often face various challenges such as emotional instability, adjustment difficulties, and immature economic responsibilities. In these circumstances, interpersonal communication becomes a crucial factor determining a couple's success in maintaining a household.
This study aims to determine the quality of interpersonal communication among young married couples in maintaining their marriages in Ngajum District, Malang Regency.
This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The subjects were young couples who had been married for at least one year. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews and documentation.
The results showed that young couples applied the five dimensions of interpersonal communication according to DeVito: openness, empathy, support, positive attitude, and equality. Of these five dimensions, openness was the most prominent communication quality, as couples tended to prioritize honesty in expressing their feelings, marital problems, and hopes to their partners. This openness helped couples build trust, minimize misunderstandings, and expedite the resolution of marital conflicts. Therefore, interpersonal communication is key to maintaining the integrity of marital relationships among young couples in Ngajum District, Malang Regency.
