Abstract

Indonesia possesses abundant fishery potential, particularly in the North Coast (Pantura) region of Lamongan Regency. The fish species found in this area are highly diverse, including sharks, which are targeted for their high market value despite being listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Shark utilization has provided various benefits to the community as a primary occupation and source of income in Brondong District; however, this situation is concerning as it contradicts the ideal conservation status of sharks as protected animals. This study aims to determine the effect of educational background, socio-economic status, and community attitudes on shark utilization behavior. This research employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a survey method. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and path analysis. The descriptive results explain that the Brondong community adheres to Javanese Mataram ethnicity, previously influenced by the Majapahit Kingdom, characterized by the petik laut tradition and the utilization of marine resources such as sharks. Furthermore, the path analysis was divided into two testing blocks. The results of Block 1 indicated that educational background had no significant effect on attitude (path coefficient of -0.052; sig. 0.610). Conversely, the results of Block 2 demonstrated that attitude had a significant influence on shark utilization (path coefficient of -0.283; sig. 0.005). Consequently, it is concluded that there is a significant relationship between attitude and shark utilization behavior among the community in Brondong District, Lamongan Regency. This research also meets the requirements to be utilized as a biology learning resource.
