Abstract

The cognitive domain plays a crucial role in science learning as it facilitates students’ understanding of themselves and their surrounding environment, enabling them to apply scientific knowledge in social contexts. Learning outcomes are defined as changes in students’ knowledge and abilities resulting from the learning process. However, 21st-century skills extend beyond cognitive competence and emphasize higher-order thinking skills, particularly creative thinking, which is recognized as one of the objectives of national education. This study aimed to examine the effect of the Conservation-Based Learning model on students’ cognitive learning outcomes and creative thinking skills in the human reproductive system topic. A quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach was employed. Simple random sampling was used to assign participants to the experimental and control groups, with class 6.G.5 designated as the experimental group and class 6.B.5 as the control group. The findings indicate that the implementation of Conservation-Based Learning in science instruction significantly improved students’ learning outcomes, as evidenced by higher mean post-test scores in the experimental group compared to the control group. In addition, students’ creative thinking skills increased with an N-gain score of 63.5%, categorized as moderately effective. Comparative analysis between pre-test and post-test results revealed significant differences in both cognitive learning outcomes and creative thinking skills following the intervention.
