Abstract

TikTok social media has become a significant space in shaping the representation of values and self-expression, including in displaying the concept of feminine energy through Shasa Zhania's TikTok account @_shaz. This study aims to explore the reception of Generation Z, specifically members of the Girls On Path community, toward the representation of feminine energy displayed in the content, as well as to understand how subjects receive, interpret, and negotiate the meanings contained in the content based on their experiences and social contexts. The approach used is qualitative, based on Stuart Hall’s reception theory through the encoding-decoding model. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five subjects who actively follow @_shaz's TikTok content. The results show that the subjects' reception of feminine energy is not singular, but diverse and influenced by the individual’s background of experience, emotional condition, and social context. The reception process occurs gradually, starting from exposure to content appearing through social media algorithms, then developing into interest, and finally producing personal interpretations. Most subjects are in a dominant-hegemonic position, where feminine energy is received as values of gentleness, emotional stability, self-acceptance, and a positive attitude in interacting in the digital space. Meanwhile, some other subjects are in a negotiated position because, although they accept the values displayed, they adjust them to their personal character, life experiences, and the social demands they face. No subjects were found in the oppositional position, indicating that the reception of feminine energy tends to be reflective and contextual. Thus, subjects play an active role in shaping the meaning of media messages, so that feminine energy is not only understood as a representation from the creator but also as a value that is reconstructed according to the life experiences of Generation Z.
