Abstract
Background: Gouty arthritis in the elderly is often triggered by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, resulting in chronic and acute pain. To address this nursing problem, non-pharmacological methods such as warm compresses with ginger and lemongrass can be an alternative option. This professional thesis research focuses on analyzing the effect of applying warm ginger and lemongrass compresses in reducing the pain scale experienced by elderly gout arthritis patients.
Method: This study used a descriptive qualitative design with a case study approach on Mrs. R (56 years old) in Cokro Hamlet, Pakis Subdistrict. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, head-to-toe physical examination, and uric acid level examination using a GCU device. The intervention was carried out intensively during the period from March 26 to April 3, 2025.
Result: Initial assessment showed that Mrs. R experienced acute pain with the following PQRST profile: (P) pain triggered by uric acid, (Q) felt like stabbing, (R) located in the knee, leg, and waist, (S) pain scale of 8, (T) intermittent, with uric acid levels of 15.4 mg/dL. After applying warm ginger and lemongrass compresses at a temperature of 40–43°C for 15–20 minutes, the final evaluation showed a significant decrease in pain scale to 2 and a decrease in
Conclusion: The application of warm ginger and lemongrass compresses has been proven effective in reducing pain intensity and uric acid levels in patients with gouty arthritis. This therapy is recommended as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to improve the quality of life of the elderly.
