Abstract
Background: The global geriatric population continues to increase, leading to significant
impacts on healthcare systems, including dermatological care. With advancing age, elderly
skin undergoes various physiological changes, such as decreased skin barrier function,
reduced sebum production, and diminished elasticity, which increase susceptibility to
various skin disorders.
Objective: This study aimed to describe the characteristics of skin diseases among geriatric
patients attending the Dermatology and Venereology Outpatient Clinic of Universitas
Muhammadiyah Malang General Hospital during the year 2024.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive observational design with a retrospective
approach, analyzing medical record data of geriatric patients aged ≥60 years.
Results: The results showed that among 45 geriatric patients, the majority were male
(68.88%), with the 60–74-year age group being the most prevalent (80%). Inflammatory
skin diseases were the most common classification (80%), with lichen simplex chronicus as
the most frequent diagnosis (22.22%), followed by psoriasis vulgaris (19.44%) and allergic
contact dermatitis (19.45%). Most patients had no recorded history of comorbid diseases.
Conclusion: Inflammatory skin diseases constitute the main dermatological problem among
geriatric patients at the Dermatology and Venereology Outpatient Clinic of UMM General
Hospital, predominantly affecting males and individuals aged 60–74 years. These findings
highlight the importance of special attention to the management of chronic inflammatory
skin diseases in the geriatric population.
