Abstract

Learning motivation is an important factor in the success of students in designing mathematical problem-solving strategies. This study aims to describe the level of learning motivation of eighth-grade junior high school students towards mathematical problem-solving strategies based on four factors, namely intrinsic goal orientation, extrinsic goal orientation, controlling beliefs for learning, and self-efficacy. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach with a questionnaire instrument developed based on Liu and Lin's (2010) motivation framework and linked to Polya's problem-solving stages. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that students' learning motivation was in the high category. The most dominant factor was controlling belief in learning, followed by self-efficacy, intrinsic goal orientation, and extrinsic goal orientation. These findings confirm that belief in one's efforts and abilities plays an important role in students' perseverance and reflection when solving mathematical problems. The implication is that teachers need to develop learning that fosters belief in learning and self-efficacy so that students' problem-solving strategies are more optimal.
