Abstract
Introduction: Scoliosis can interfere with chest wall movement which is a factor causing restrictive ventilation disorders in decreasing vital capacity. Increasing the degree of spinal curvature can be a factor that limits thoracic expansion and worsens breathing in patients. Research Objective: This aims to determine the relationship between the degree of scoliosis and thoracic expansion. This study uses a descriptive analytical method with a cross-sectional study design. Thoracic expansion was measured using the midline. Research Results: There were 35 scoliosis patients consisting of 28 women and 7 men with ages ranging from childhood to adulthood. The results of this study's hypothesis test p value> 0.05, so the data results stated that there was no relationship between the degree of scoliosis and thoracic expansion. Conclusion: This study did not find a relationship between the degree of scoliosis and thoracic expansion at Posture Clinic Surabaya, this was because the respondents of this study had a mild degree of scoliosis. However, the higher the degree of scoliosis, the lower the thoracic cage in the axilla and ICS 4.
