Abstract
Background: Children with special needs have limitations that lead to dependence on others in performing Activities of Daily Living (ADL). These limitations can hinder independence, particularly in self-care, thereby requiring assistance from others to carry out ADL. Poor personal hygiene can result in a low quality of lifestyle and have negative impacts on health. One indicator related to ADL independence can be observed through Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS) practiced at school.
Objective: This study aimed to identify the relationship between the level of independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) among adolescents with special needs with intellectual disabilities and Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS) at school.
Methods: This study used a quantitative design with a correlational approach. The research was conducted at SLBN Kota Batu, with a population of 82 students with intellectual disabilities aged 10–19 years who were not experiencing physical illness and had no physical disabilities. The research sample consisted of children with special needs selected using purposive sampling, totaling 55 students who met the inclusion criteria. The instruments used included interview sheets and observation of the level of independence using the PASS instrument and PHBS at school, which had been tested for reliability. Data analysis was performed using Spearman correlation.
Results and Conclusion: The results of this study showed a positive and significant relationship between the level of independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) among adolescents with intellectual disabilities at SLBN Kota Batu (r = 0.413; p = 0.002). The strength of the relationship was in the moderate category, indicating that the higher the level of independence of adolescents in performing daily activities, the better the implementation of PHBS at school. This finding was supported by the distribution of respondents’ data, where 61.8% of adolescents were independent in ADL and 78.2% demonstrated good PHBS. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the level of ADL independence and PHBS at school among adolescents with special needs.
