Abstract

Background: New patient admission is the initial stage of inpatient care that influences service
quality, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. This study aimed to identify the implementation of
new patient admission in the Galunggung Inpatient Ward of Dr. Saiful Anwar Regional General
Hospital based on compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the obstacles faced
by nurses.
Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach.
Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving three nurses working in
the Galunggung Ward.
Results: The findings showed that new patient admission was generally carried out in accordance
with SOPs; however, the implementation was not fully consistent, particularly in the aspect of
patient orientation. Patient orientation provided benefits by increasing patients’ sense of safety and
improving cooperation between patients and their families. The main obstacles included time
constraints, patients’ conditions, and nurses’ workload.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the implementation of new patient admission in the Galunggung Ward
has been conducted fairly well; however, improved consistency in applying SOPs is necessary to
optimize the quality and safety of nursing care services.
