Abstract
Introduction: The simultaneous use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes or known as dual-use semaline is common among young adults. This study aims to determine the relationship between the habit of dual-use of cigarettes and decreased respiratory function.
Methods: This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample amounted to 37 young adults respondents aged 17-25 years who were dual cigarette users for at least 1 year, obtained through purposive sampling techniques. Lung function measurement was carried out using spirometry with FEV1 and FVC parameters. Data analysis was performed using the Shapiro- Wilk test and Pearson correlation.
Results: Normal distribution of FEV1 and FVC data (p > 0.05). The results of the Pearson correlation test showed that there was no significant relationship between the duration of double cigarette use with FEV1 (r = -0.232; p = 0.167) or FVC (r = -209; p = 0.214). However, there was a positive association between FEV1 and FVC (r = 0.545; p = 0.000)
Conclusions: No significant relationship was found between the duration of double cigarette use and the decrease in lung function, but the direction of negative correlation showed a physiological trend of decrease in lung function with the duration of use. The age factor of the young respondents likely influenced these results. Further research with a longitudinal design and a wider sample is needed to look at the long-term impact.
