Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally. Cardiac catheterization has become the primary invasive procedure for both diagnosis and intervention. Treatment success is influenced by various factors, including patient sociodemographic characteristics, which are crucial to identify for developing effective prevention strategies.
Objective: This study aimed to identify the sociodemographic characteristics and types of procedures among patients undergoing cardiac catheterization at the UMM Hospital Cath Lab.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive quantitative design with a retrospective approach. Data were collected from the medical records of the entire population of patients who underwent cardiac catheterization from January to December 2024, comprising a total population of 181 respondents. Univariate analysis was performed to describe the frequency distribution and percentage of each variable.
Results: The majority of patients were male (77.3%), with the largest age group being early elderly (46-55 years) (65.7%). Other characteristics revealed a majority had a high school education (51.9%), were private sector employees (43.6%), and had a history of smoking (61.3%) and hypertension (55.2%). The procedures were dominated by therapeutic interventions, specifically Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PPCI) (48.10%) and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) (35.90%).
Conclusion: The patient profile was dominated by early-elderly males with a secondary education and employment in the private or entrepreneurial sector. A history of smoking and hypertension were the primary risk factors. Services were focused on acute and therapeutic cases, with the majority of procedures being coronary interventions (PPCI/PCI).
