Abstract

Twenty-first century education emphasizes the development of higher-order thinking skills, particularly critical thinking and creative thinking skills. However, science learning in schools is still largely dominated by conventional teaching materials that do not optimally encourage active student engagement, especially for abstract topics such as the human excretory system. This study aimed to analyze the effect of using an e-module based on the OIDDE learning model on the critical thinking and creative thinking skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Negeri Kota Batu. This research employed a mixed-methods approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pre-test post-test nonequivalent control group design. The research sample consisted of two classes: class VIII D as the experimental group, which received instruction using the OIDDE-based e-module, and class VIII B as the control group, which received conventional instruction. The research instruments included tests of critical thinking and creative thinking skills, observation sheets, and interview guidelines. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann–Whitney U Test, while qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the use of an e-module based on the OIDDE learning model had an effect on improving students’ critical thinking and creative thinking skills. Therefore, the OIDDE-based e-module can be used as an effective alternative learning strategy in science education to develop students’ critical and creative thinking skills, particularly in the excretory system topic.
