Abstract
Background: The loss of a life partner is a significant event in the life course that has a substantial impact on the emotional, psychological, and social conditions of the bereaved individual. This situation commonly elicits grief responses in the form of profound sadness, feelings of loneliness, and demands for adjustment to changes in roles and responsibilities in daily life. Objective: This study aims to provide an in-depth description of individuals’ experiences in coping with the death of a spouse, including emotional responses, coping strategies, and the process of role adjustment following the loss. Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design using a case study approach, involving two subjects: Mrs. L (P1) and Mr. A (P2). Data validity was ensured through source triangulation using semi-structured, face-to-face interviews. Data collection techniques included interviews, observation, and documentation. Results: Data analysis derived from the interviews, which had been validated by the participants, identified three main themes: (1) coping strategies in managing emotional grief, (2) emotional responses following the loss of a spouse, and (3) adjustment of roles and responsibilities. Conclusion: Experiences of grief following the loss of a spouse demonstrate varying characteristics among individuals. These differences are influenced by adaptive capacity, social support, and individual meaning-making of the loss event. Practically, these findings may serve as a foundation for nurses in providing holistic and empathetic mental health nursing care. Future research is recommended to involve a larger number of participants to obtain a more comprehensive understanding.
