Abstract
Background: Elderly are prone to physiological decline, including excess weight and impaired dynamic balance, which are thought to contribute to decreased lung function. Excess weight increases the mechanical load on breathing, while poor dynamic balance can limit physical activity and decrease cardiorespiratory fitness.
Purpose: This study aims to determine the relationship between excess weight and dynamic balance levels with lung function in the elderly.
Method: This study is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design involving 22 overweight and obese elderly individuals selected through purposive sampling. Excess weight was assessed using BMI, waist circumference, arm circumference, and fat thickness, dynamic balance was measured using the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), and lung function was assessed using a spirometer (FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC ratio). Data analysis included correlation and multiple linear regression tests to assess the relationship and simultaneous influence of excess weight and dynamic balance on lung function.
Result: Based on multiple linear regression analysis, the results obtained were p = 0.283 (> 0.05) for FVC, p = 0.545 (> 0.05) for FEV1, and p = 0.009 (< 0.05) for the FEV1/FVC ratio. From these three results, it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between excess weight and dynamic balance with lung function in the elderly.
Conclusion: There is no relationship between excess weight and dynamic balance levels with lung function in the elderly.
