Abstract
Background: Patient non-compliance in undergoing physiotherapy rehabilitation programs is a significant problem, with only 50% of patients consistently doing home exercise programs (HEP). Therapeutic communication is suspected to be a determining factor in patient compliance. This study aims to analyze the analyze the relationship between therapeutic communication and HEP compliance in patients of independent physiotherapy practice in Lowokwaru District, Malang City.
Research Methods: A cross-sectional study involved 81 respondents aged 18-69 years who had undergone therapy at least two meetings, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using the Global Interprofessional Therapeutic Communication Scale (GITCS) and Exercise Adherence Rating Scale (EARS) questionnaires, then analyzed using the Spearman Rho test (α=0.05; CI 95%).
Result: There was a moderate-strength positive association (r=0.439; p<0.001) between therapeutic communication and HEP adherence. The average therapeutic communication score was 128.56 (91.8%) and compliance was 19.21 (80.04%).
Conclusion: The quality of physiotherapists' therapeutic communication contributes meaningfully to the patient's HEP compliance. Strengthening the therapeutic communication curriculum in physiotherapy education and continuing training for practitioners is recommended.
