Abstract
Background: Patients with gout arthritis experience recurrent pain with varying intensity, which affects their physical activities, emotional well-being, and the way they carry out daily life. In coping with this condition, patients develop various personal strategies to manage pain, often based on their individual experiences, perceptions, and beliefs rather than solely on medical recommendations. This study focuses on the phenomenon of variability in patients’ experiences and strategies in managing gout-related pain. Objective: This study aimed to explore patients’ experiences in managing pain due to gout arthritis. Methods: This research employed a qualitative approach using content analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving three participants with a history of gout arthritis. Data credibility was strengthened through source triangulation. Results: The findings revealed three main themes: (1) patients’ experiences of gout-related pain, (2) strategies used by patients to manage gout pain, and (3) factors influencing the choice of pain management methods. Pain was described as stabbing, burning, aching, and throbbing sensations, commonly triggered by the consumption of high-purine foods, physical fatigue, and prolonged standing. Conclusion: Pain management in gout arthritis is individual in nature and influenced by physical, psychological, social, and economic factors. Therefore, a holistic and patient-centered nursing approach is required.
