Abstract
Abstract: Hypertension is a chronic disease that requires long-term management, one of which is dietary regulation. Dietary adherence in patients with hypertension remains a challenge, influenced by eating habits, knowledge, and family support, and poor adherence may lead to uncontrolled blood pressure and an increased risk of complications. This study aimed to explore the description of family roles and dietary adherence in patients with hypertension. A qualitative method with a case study design was employed, involving one patient with hypertension as the main subject and family members as supporting participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model with source triangulation to ensure data validity. The results showed that dietary adherence among patients with hypertension was inconsistent, with major barriers including long-standing habits of consuming salty foods and limited understanding of appropriate dietary practices. Families played a role in supporting patients, such as reminding salt restriction and assisting in food preparation; however, this role was not yet optimal. Patients expressed hope for improved health conditions and controlled blood pressure. In conclusion, dietary adherence in patients with hypertension is influenced by habits, knowledge, and family roles; therefore, continuous hypertension dietary education involving family members is needed to improve patients’ adherence to dietary management.
