Abstract
Background : Final-year students often experience anxiety during the thesis-writing process due to academic demands, time pressure, and high levels of academic responsibility. Unmanaged anxiety can affect sleep quality. Poor sleep quality may reduce concentration, cognitive function, and students’ ability to complete their thesis effectively.
Objective : This study aimed to analyze the relationship between anxiety levels and sleep quality among nursing students who were in the process of writing their thesis at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang.
Methods : This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 159 respondents were selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. Anxiety levels were measured using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS), while sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test.
Results : The results showed that most respondents experienced normal levels of anxiety (56.6%), and the majority had poor sleep quality (70.4%). The Spearman Rank correlation test indicated a significant relationship between anxiety levels and sleep quality (r = 0.001; p-value = 0.319).
Conclusion : There is a significant relationship between anxiety levels and sleep quality among nursing students who are writing their thesis, where higher levels of anxiety are associated with poorer sleep quality. However, sleep quality is not only influenced by anxiety but also by other factors such as gender, screen time, living arrangements, and physical activity.
