Abstract
Introduction: Depression is a mood disorder characterized by feelings of sadness, loss of interest, and negative thoughts about oneself and the future. It can affect individuals in various life situations, including the loss of a family member. While bereavement in college students does not always lead to psychological distress, under certain circumstances, it can be develop into depression. This condition can increase the risk of self-harm, which is the deliberate act of self-harm without suicidal intent.
Objectives: The study aims to determine the relationship between levels of depression and self-harm behavior in students who are bereaved after the death of a family member.
Methods: This study used a cross-sectional approach with a sample of 255 respondents selected through purposive and convenience sampling techniques and tested using Spearman rank correlation. The instruments used were the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) to measure depression levels and the SelfHarm Inventory (SHI) to measure self-harm levels.
Results: The results of this study show a significant relationship with a significance value of p = 0.000 (p<a=0.05) which is in the moderate category with a correlation coefficient value of (0.4437) and the direction of the relationship is positive.
Conclusions: A moderate correlation indicates that depression levels significantly influence self-harm behavior in bereaved students. The positive correlation indicates that the higher the level of depression experienced by students after the loss of a family member, the higher the tendency to engage in self-harm behavior.
