Abstract
Background: The internet has become a vital necessity for people in the global era, especially for gamers who can digitally connect with others around the world. However, excessive internet use can lead to negative impacts, such as internet gaming disorder. Internet gaming disorder can lead to negative effects such as depression, anxiety, and hostility, which are largely influenced by emotion regulation.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between Internet gaming disorder and emotional regulation in students in Malang.
Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design conducted among students in Malang. A total of 435 participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through the Internet Gaming Disorder Test-20 (IGDT-20) and the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). Data analysis was performed using Spearman’s correlation test to examine the relationships between variables.
Results: The results showed that Internet Gaming Disorder was not significantly related to emotion regulation in the domain of Cognitive Reappraisal (r = –0.032; p = 0.506) or Expressive Suppression (r = 0.052; p = 0.281). The correlation values indicate that there is no relationship between Internet Gaming Disorder and respondents’ emotion regulation.
Conclusion: This study shows that Internet Gaming Disorder is not significantly related to emotion regulation in the domains of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. These findings indicate that students’ emotion regulation is influenced by factors other than Internet Gaming Disorder. Nevertheless, Internet Gaming Disorder still requires attention to prevent it from developing into addictive behavior that could disrupt psychological well-being.
