Abstract
Background: Online gaming is a form of digital entertainment that is played via the internet and enables individuals to interact with players from different locations. When used excessively, it can develop into internet gaming disorder. Internet gaming disorder has been associated with various negative physical and psychological outcomes, including poor sleep quality and increased levels of anxiety.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and sleep quality as well as anxiety among university students in Indonesia.
Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted among university students in Indonesia. A total of 659 participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of the Internet Gaming Disorder Test-20 (IGDT-20), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test to examine the relationships among the variables.
Results: The results showed a significant positive correlation between Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and sleep quality (r = 0.38; p < 0.001). In addition, a significant positive correlation was also found between IGD and anxiety levels (r = 0.33; p < 0.001). These findings indicate that higher levels of IGD are associated with poorer sleep quality and increased levels of anxiety.
Conclusion: There is a significant but weak relationship between sleep quality and anxiety. This finding suggests that, in addition to Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), other factors may contribute to poor sleep quality and elevated anxiety, including excessive gaming duration, disruptions in sleep rhythms, social motivations for gaming, feelings of loneliness, and emotional distress
