Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is a transitional phase marked by significant changes in physical, psychological, and social aspects, making adolescents vulnerable to emotional and behavioral problems. Maladaptive emotion regulation can increase the risk of deviant behaviors and mental health disorders. Family support is a key factor in the development of adolescents’ emotional stability, as it serves as a primary source of character formation and psychological reinforcement. However, empirical evidence examining the relationship between family support and adolescent emotion regulation remains limited, particularly in the context of vocational high schools in the City of Batu.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between family support and emotion regulation among adolescents at SMK Wiyata Husada Batu.
Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design with a correlational approach. The study population included all 166 students of SMK Wiyata Husada Batu who met the inclusion criteria, using a total sampling technique. Family support was measured using the Family Support Scale (FSS), while emotion regulation was assessed using the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire–Short Form (ERQ-S), which includes the strategies of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression.
Results: The analysis showed that family support had a positive and significant relationship with cognitive reappraisal (r = 0.416; p < 0.01) and a negative and significant relationship with expressive suppression (r = –0.315; p < 0.01). These findings indicate that higher levels of family support are associated with more adaptive emotion regulation abilities and a reduced tendency to suppress emotional expression among adolescents.
Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between family support and adolescents’ emotion regulation abilities, both in the use of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression strategies. Family support can be regarded as a protective factor that plays an important role in supporting adolescents’ emotional and psychological health during middle adolescence.
