Abstract

Background: Stroke is one of the diseases that can cause long-term disability in older adults, leading to a decline in their ability to perform daily activities. This condition places families in a crucial role in providing home care, particularly in psychological and social aspects. Appropriate family support can help improve motor function and the recovery process. Objective This study aims to determine the role of families in caring for older adults with stroke and to describe the forms of family roles in fulfilling patients’ needs during the home-care process. Methods This study employed a qualitative research design using a Case Study Research approach. Data validity was ensured through data triangulation. Data were collected using structured interviews and analyzed thematically. Results The case study findings identified five themes: (1) family coping with the client’s illness; (2) physical role and basic care; (3) emotional and psychological role; (4) educational and rehabilitative role; and (5) the impact of the family’s role on recovery. Conclusion The findings indicate that families play a very important role in the recovery process of older adults with stroke. Families performed their roles adequately, including providing physical care, emotional support, and consistent implementation of home-based therapy. Patience, consistency, and optimism within the family helped improve patients’ physical abilities and motivated them to continue practicing.
