Abstract
Long-distance relationships (LDRs) require more intensive and adaptive communication patterns due to the limitations of physical meetings. Under these conditions, conflict becomes inevitable, and one common response that emerges is silent treatment, which refers to the behavior of choosing silence or temporarily ceasing communication when problems arise. This study aims to understand the experiences, meanings, and impacts of silent treatment on communication dynamics in long-distance relationships from the perspective of individuals who experience it. This research employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews with six participants aged 21–23 years who are currently or have previously been involved in LDRs with varying durations and distances.
The findings reveal that silent treatment is interpreted differently by each participant. Some participants perceive silence as a strategy to regulate emotions, exercise self-control, and prevent larger conflicts, particularly when emotions are considered unstable for rational communication. In this context, silent treatment is viewed as temporary and helpful in facilitating self-reflection before rebuilding communication. However, other participants interpret silent treatment as a form of conflict avoidance, emotional punishment, or even hurtful behavior, as it creates uncertainty, anxiety, and psychological pressure. These differing interpretations are strongly influenced by the couple’s communication patterns, prior emotional experiences, as well as how silent treatment is carried out and concluded.
The impact of silent treatment on relationships also shows ambivalent results. In some cases, relationships return to normal after a period of silence due to follow-up actions such as clarification and discussion. In other cases, silent treatment prolongs conflict, creates feelings of being unheard, and leaves issues unresolved. This study concludes that silent treatment in long-distance relationships cannot be generalized as entirely negative or positive behavior. Its effectiveness largely depends on context, duration, mutual openness, and the commitment to re-establish healthy communication. Therefore, openness, clarity of intent behind the silence, and communication agreements are essential in maintaining the quality of long-distance relationships.
