Abstract

Background: Losing a mother is a traumatic experience that profoundly impacts the psychological, emotional, and social aspects of adult individuals. The grieving process involves not only deep sorrow but also significant changes in family dynamics and life roles. Purpose: This study aims to deeply explore the meaning of the grieving process and life adaptation experienced by adults after losing their mother. Method: The research employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological case study design. The participant is a young adult (21 years old) who lost their mother six years ago. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews that were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using inductive analysis. Data trustworthiness was ensured through participant checking, thick description, audit trail, and confirmability audit. Results: The analysis yielded three main themes: (1) Emotional journey and adaptation following an unexpected loss, encompassing shock, denial, and profound regret; (2) Life adaptation and transformation of family relations, marked by the loss of the mother's instrumental role, drastic life changes, and strengthened bonds with the father; (3) Loss as a turning point for resilience and meaning-making, where the participant developed resilience, early maturity, and a deeper understanding of parental roles. Conclusion: The grieving process in adults who lose their mother is a complex journey involving the reconstruction of life's
meaning, role transformation, and the building of resilience. These findings emphasize the importance of holistic support encompassing psychological, emotional, and social aspects to aid individuals in adapting post-loss.
