Abstract
Background: With the advancement of technology, social interactions have also shifted, giving rise to the phenomenon of phubbing, in which individuals pay more attention to their smartphones than to face-to-face interactions. A similar phenomenon occurs in the family context, known as parental phubbing, where parents neglect their children due to excessive smartphone use during direct interactions . Such ineffective interaction patterns may affect adolescents’ psychological aspects, particularly self-esteem and depressive symptoms, as adolescence is a vulnerable stage of emotional and social development.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between parental phubbing, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms among adolescents in Malang City.
Methods: This research employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 241 adolescents aged 12–18 years, selected from four schools in Malang City using purposive sampling. Instruments included the Parental phubbing Scale (PPS) to measure parental phubbing behaviour, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) to assess self-esteem, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) to measure depressive symptoms. Data were analysed using Spearman’s correlation test.
Results: The findings indicated that parental phubbing was not significantly associated with adolescents’ self-esteem (r = -0.099; p = 0.123). However, there was a significant positive relationship between parental phubbing and depressive symptoms (r = 0. 291; p < 0.001), although the strength of the correlation was weak.
Conclusion: This study concludes that parental phubbing is not related to adolescents’ self-esteem but is associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining quality parent–adolescent interactions to support mental health.
