Abstract

Background: Stroke causes physical and motor impairment as well as reduced independence, making long-term care and family support essential. Apart from medical treatment, many families utilize complementary therapy through the administration of herbal medicine (jamu) to support the recovery process. This study aims to explore family experiences in providing jamu as complementary therapy for post-stroke patients at home. Methods: This research applied a qualitative phenomenological design with three participants: Mr. A (P1), Ms. W (P2), and Mrs. N (P3). Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, and validated using source triangulation. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Results: The analysis identified three main themes: (1) knowledge and utilization of jamu in post-stroke care, (2) identification of herbal ingredients used, including pegagan (centella asiatica), celery, turmeric, sembung (blumea balsamifera), and free-range chicken eggs, and (3) family experience in caring for post-stroke patients at home, encompassing assistance with daily activities, massage, range-of-motion exercises, and emotional support. Conclusion: Providing jamu is a form of family support thatcredibility positively impacts comfort, motivation, and quality of life in post-stroke patients. Family participation in complementary therapy plays a crucial role in encouraging recovery and sustaining patient well-being.
