Abstract

As a mass communication medium, films have a strong ability to convey moral messages and social values to a wide audience, including issues related to the relationship between humans and nature. This study aims to analyze the moral messages about the relationship between humans and nature represented in the film Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) and to examine the tendency of the film's messages to portray values of balance, harmony, and ecological ethics. This study uses a qualitative approach with content analysis, based on the theory of Deep Ecology proposed by Arne Naess. The object of this study is the live-action version of the film Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) produced by Netflix, with the unit of analysis being ten selected scenes that represent the intrinsic value of nature, the rejection of anthropocentrism, ecological awareness (self-realization), and ecological harmony and responsibility. Data was obtained through in-depth observation of the film's scenes and dialogues, supported by relevant literature studies. The results show that the film consistently represents nature as an entity with intrinsic value and moral standing equal to that of humans. The character Aang is depicted as a symbol of ecological awareness that places humans as part of the ecological community, not as rulers of nature. In contrast, the actions of the Fire Nation represent a critique of the anthropocentric view that triggers exploitation and environmental destruction. This study concludes that Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) conveys a strong moral message about the importance of maintaining balance and harmony in the relationship between humans and nature, and affirms the role of film as a medium for reflection and environmental ethics education in the context of mass communication.
