Abstract

Background : The sandwich generation refers to adults who carry dual caregiving roles for both their children and aging parents, making them vulnerable to emotional stress and decreased levels of happiness. Self-compassion is believed to play a role in enhancing psychological well-being. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-compassion and happiness in the sandwich generation.
Methods : This study utilized a correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 101 sandwich-generation respondents were recruited through purposive sampling. Data were obtained using self-administered online questionnaires. The measurement instruments employed were the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Oxford Happiness Scale (OHS). Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test with the support of SPSS version 25.
Results : Most respondents had moderate levels of self-compassion (52%) and moderate levels of happiness (57%). A positive and significant relationship was found between self-compassion and happiness, with r = 0,273 and p = 0,001 (<0.05), indicating a moderate correlation strength.
Conclusion : Individuals in the sandwich generation with higher levels of self-compassion tend to have better happiness levels. Self-compassion may serve as an adaptive coping mechanism to enhance emotional well-being among individuals with dual caregiving responsibilities.
Keywords : Self-compassion, happiness, sandwich generation, mental health.
