Ritual Communication in the Petik Laut Tradition in Kalibuntu Village: An Ethnography of Communication Analysis Using the SPEAKING Model.

This thesis, titled “Ritual Communication in the Petik Laut Tradition in Kalibuntu Village: An Ethnography of Communication Analysis Using the SPEAKING Model,” aims to explore the forms and processes of ritual communication found in the Petik Laut tradition in Kalibuntu Village, Kraksaan District, Probolinggo Regency, using an ethnography of communication approach and the SPEAKING model by Dell Hymes. The Petik Laut tradition is a ritual practice of the local community as an expression of gratitude for the harvest of marine resources and safety. So far, studies on this tradition have mostly been examined from anthropological and cultural history perspectives; therefore, this research attempts to provide a contribution to the development of Communication Studies, particularly in the field of ritual communication.

The research method used is qualitative, employing an ethnography of communication approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was strengthened through source and technical triangulation. The results of the study show that ritual communication in the Petik Laut tradition takes place through the elements of Setting, Participants, Ends, Act Sequence, Key, Instrumentalities, Norms, and Genre, which are interrelated. This ritual communication functions as a means of forming the cultural identity of coastal communities, strengthening social solidarity.
